Escape rooms are like real life video games. If this doesn’t make you want to go out and do one right now, you’re reading the wrong blog.
These rooms are a relatively new thing, and they’re absolutely brilliant. You’re locked in a room, with one or more friends. Your objective is usually to escape, or to complete some other complex task. Standing in your way are a series of obstacles – both physical and mental – which you must overcome. At their best, these rooms culminate in a frantic finale, as the clock ticks down and panic sets in while your team rushes to complete the final challenge. It’s excellent fun, especially if you’re looking for something to do with a few friends that isn’t food or drink related.
I’ve played four rooms so far, and enjoyed all of them. It’s quickly becoming a Thing I Do. Quality is obviously dictated by the room you’re playing, most of which tend to be unique, designed by the creator for each location. The design process itself is also fascinating, and I always end up having a lengthy chat with the staff afterwards about their creative choices.
These things are getting more and more popular, so there’s probably one very near you. Try it sometime!
